Potential impact of the situation in Russia and Ukraine on China's pulp and paper making industry

May 23, 2022

Since the beginning of the dispute between Russia and Ukraine, the economic development of various regions in the world has been affected to varying degrees. For the pulp and paper making industry, China's raw materials, whether wood pulp or wood chips, are largely dependent on the overseas market, and finished paper, especially high-end products, also need to be partially imported.

Regarding to paper and paperboard, Russia is also one of the main sources of Chinese newsprint, paper bag paper and box board corrugated paper. Especially in newsprint and paper bag paper, the import volume from Russia accounted for nearly 50% of China's total import in 2021, and these two types of paper in China are highly dependent on import. Therefore, it can be seen that Russia plays an important role in China's domestic newsprint and paper bag paper supply. For box board corrugated paper, China imported 6.1 million tons in 2021, and Russia accounted for 9% of the total import, about 550000 tons, including 190000 tons of whole wood pulp Kraft linerboard. Russia is the second largest source of kraft linerboard in China, behind the largest source of the United States (400000 tons of kraft linerboard).
